“Why do test sets?”
Test sets in swimming are done for teaching and learning purposes. Coaches can pinpoint areas that need improvements for individual swimmers or the group as a whole. The swimmers learn through test sets what they are actually capable of doing, by challenging themselves past their comfort zones and by putting coach instructions into action.
Test sets also build swimmer confidence in a safe and familiar environment. Swim meets also build confidence but are sometimes adversely affected by the anxiety and stress felt at competition. More confidence is built during a test sets and the repeats of them, than at one swim meet.
Lastly, just like building confidence, swim meet nerves may not always allow swimmers to appreciate personal improvements. Whereas, test sets, in a comfortable environment, produce great results.
